Identifying the Parts of the Roof
If you want to know more about roofing the next time you call in a roofer, read this article, as it breaks down all the components used to make up the canopy.
Decking or sheathing
This is often made using 1⁄2-inch plywood; the decking is what closes and reinforces a roof and provides a durable surface for the installation of the shingles.
Roof edge or eaves edge
All the boards that run along the edge of the roof or eaves are often referred to as fascias.
Attic
This is the space beneath the roof. The attic has to be ventilated to protect the roof against excessive temperatures in summer and warm moist air created by the house in winter.
Saddle
A structure located behind the high side of a chimney and other similar projections from the roof. It diverts rainwater.
Underlay membrane
This coating, made of felt saturated with asphalt or a synthetic fabric, protects the shingles against resin released by the wood decking and protects the decking itself against bad weather.
Eaves membrane
This protective membrane is placed under some or all of the asphalt shingles to stop water infiltration due to “ice dams” during the winter.
Underlay membrane
This coating, often made using felt saturated with asphalt or synthetic fabric and protects the shingles against any resin that is released by the wood decking and is what protects the decking against bad weather.
Drip edge
This covers the edge of the roof and reduces the chance of water infiltration.
Ridge
The horizontal line at the top of the roof.
Valley
The “V-cut” angle runs along the junction of two slopes of a roof.
